Purported Philip Morris-Backed AI Tool Reportedly Generated Responses Opposing Stricter EU Tobacco Rules

Philip Morris International reportedly promoted a "Your Voice Your Choice" tool that allegedly generated first-person responses for an EU call for evidence on tobacco regulation. Investigators reportedly linked hundreds of submissions to the tool and found that it allegedly largely steered users toward arguments against stricter rules, sometimes by purportedly adding points they had not selected.

Purported AI bots reportedly submitted 90,835 fraudulent responses to a UK government consultation on tobacco and vaping, mostly opposing disposable-vape restrictions. The submissions made up 76% of responses and distorted the apparent balance of public opinion. The Department of Health and Social Care excluded them from its analysis. The operators and underlying AI technology were not identified.
